CHAPTER 3 AN ACT TO AMEND CHAPTER 256 OF THE LAWS OF 1858-59, RATIFIED THE 16th DAY OF FEBRUARY, 1859, ENTI- TLED AN ACT TO INCORPORATE THE HOWARD RE- LIEF FIRE ENGINE COMPANY IN THE TOWN OF WIL- MINGTON, N. C. WHEREAS, The Board of Aldermen of the city of Wilmington, N. C., has abolished the Volunteer Fire Department of said city, and in lieu of, and substitution therefor, has adopted a paid Fire Department; and, WHEREAS, The Howard Relief Fire Engine Company desires to continue its organization for purely benevolent and charitable purposes, and provide for the relief of its members in sickness and distress; therefore, The General Assembly of North Carolina do enact:

That the purposes of said corporation being solely those of benevolence and charity, the property now owned, or to be hereafter acquired by said corporation shall be exempt from all State, county and municipal taxation.
